Holistic Massage

Images shows twenty five reasons to have a massage with hands laid on a persons back

What is Holistic Massage?

A holistic approach is a health strategy which involves several different types of healing disciplines to be able to get long lasting results. These include diet, exercise, acupuncture, massage, reflexology, meditation, yoga, Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP (or awareness of the power of words), talking therapies and trauma healing.

A holistic approach is effective and long lasting due to its diversity. The body has several systems: nervous, respiratory, circulatory, immune/lymphatic, muscular, fascial, renal (and urinary), endocrine, digestive (and excretory), reproductive, skeletal... and then there are the systems which don't have a physical form such as the emotional and the spiritual, and even though we cannot experience these through the physical senses, they can have a huge impact in our day-to-day choices.

At Quest Holistic Therapies a full consultation is undertaken and discussions are held regarding your day to day life and activities to build a picture of your holistic massage needs and potential approaches are shared that can support you in your overall health and well being.

What type of massage is used in Holistic Massage?

Swedish and deep tissue massage is used in Holistic Massage they are very similar in approach. The primary difference is the level of pressure involved. If you’re looking for relaxation and relief from tense, tight muscles, Swedish massage is probably right for you.

If you’re recovering from an injury, deep tissue massage can be a helpful part of your treatment plan.

Quest Holistic Therapies utilises both these techniques throughout your treatment depending on your needs or can be used individually as required.

What to expect in a Swedish Massage

Swedish massage may loosen tight aching muscles caused by daily activities such as sitting at the computer or exercising. It can be very helpful for people who hold a lot of tension in their:

  • lower back
  • shoulders
  • neck

During a Swedish massage, we use techniques such as:

  • kneading
  • long strokes
  • deep circular movements
  • passive joint movements

These techniques have been developed to:

  • relax you
  • stimulate nerve endings
  • increase blood flow and lymph drainage

A traditional Swedish massage involves the whole body, but some people just wish for back, shoulder and neck areas to be undertaken. You will begin on your stomach and be asked to turn over at a halfway point.

If you have an area of particular concern, such as a tight neck, you can ask your us to spend more time in this area. Depending on your preferences, you can ask us to use light, medium, or firm pressure.

During most full-body holistic massages, the expectation is you’ll be undressed and covered with towels, you will be covered except from the area being worked on, we will pull back and adjust as we work our way around your body.

What to expect in a deep tissue massage

Deep Tissue Massage is similar to Swedish massage, but it goes farther and is intended for a different purpose.

Deep tissue massage is can be used for:

  • athletes
  • runners
  • people with injuries

It can also work for people with chronic pain conditions such as:

  • fibromyalgia
  • lower back pain

Deep tissue massage targets the inner layers of your:

  • muscles
  • tendons
  • fascia or dense connective tissue

Deep tissue massage uses many of the same stroking and kneading movements as Swedish massage, but there’s far more pressure. This pressure can sometimes be painful.

In order to reach the deep muscle tissue, we massage layer by layer of muscle, applying more and more pressure and employing special techniques with the fingers, fists, and No Hands Techniques such as arms, elbows and body weight to reach and stretch that deep tissue. This type of massage facilitates healing by releasing contracted areas of muscle and tissue. It can help increase blood flow to the soft tissues and may help to reduce inflammation.

After a thorough consultation a Deep tissue massage begins as a more traditional relaxation massage. After the muscles are warmed up, we will begin to work deep into your highlighted problem areas.

It’s important to be open with us about the level of pressure and discomfort you wish to endure. This may be different for certain areas and throughout the massage. Feel free to communicate with us before and during the massage.

You should expect a fair amount of soreness in the days following your deep tissue massage. Your therapist may recommend treating with:

  • ice
  • heat
  • stretching
